International Day of People with Disability
Derby Celebration
Friday 2nd December, 11am-2pm @ Derby Airport
Celebrate the contributions people with disability make to communities.
In 1992, the UN declared 3 December as International Day of Disabled Persons. In 1997 the event was renamed International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).
IDPwD is unique among community awareness days, as it unites disability organisations, businesses, federal, state and local governments and the community.
This year in Derby, we’ll be celebrating IDPwD a day early - on Friday the 2nd December.
Victor Djungadi Patrick is a Bunaba man and Derby local. This year, Victor will again MC our event, and if we’re lucky may perform a tune or 2 with the band.
Victor leads the Derby Ability Reference Group which is in the process of setting up an activity centre and in coming months will partner will other organisations in the community to deliver two-way learning opportunities for people with disability that enhance social inclusion and personal growth. This activity centre will also provide a safe and familiar space for people with disability and their families to come and spend time in.
“People need to be recognised and to be given the same opportunities as everyone else. This event is about the respect and integration of people with disability in the community right here in the Kimberley. Nothing about us without us,”
Victor Patrick - Lead Organiser & Event MC
